Power in International Relations
Andreas’ doctoral thesis applies a constructivist perspective on the dynamics of power in international relations, in particular as it relates to causes of war. The thesis attempts to provide a new understanding of American security policymaking during the Chinese nuclear weapons program between 1959-1965.
Foreign and Security Policy of the United States
In particular as it relates to policymaking on nuclear weapons in international relations (historically and contemporary). Other interests include decision making processes in US foreign policymaking, securitization and threat perception in American society and Sino-American relations.
International Negotiation and Conflict Transformation
Particularly interactive problem solving, including so-called Sustained Dialogue. The latter is a third track diplomacy method for, in the context of intractable conflicts, transforming relationships between whole bodies politic conceptualized chiefly by former US Under-Secretary of State Harold H. Saunders. Andreas has written about the Dartmouth Conference and its Regional Conflicts Task Force and its contribution to relationship transformation between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Andreas also has an interest in power in international negotiation, and negotiations concerning nuclear non-proliferation.
Course Convenor and Lecturer for the course “Peace and Security in the International System” (7,5 ECTS).
