Alumni board for 2016/2017 elected

The Alumni board of 2015/2016 was re-elected for one more year at the Annual General Meeting on 31 May. Thus, the board for 2016/2017 consists of Marie Allansson (President), Beatrice Schönning (Vice-President), Henrik Persson (Secretary), Magnus Öberg (Treasurer) and Christofer Hägg (Department Liaison). We look forward to continuing the work with developing the Association and hope to see current and new members at future events.   

The DPCR Alumni Association was founded in June 2013 with the aim of strengthening and fostering contacts and networks between former and current student of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. Membership is open for anyone who has a) obtained credits in at least one course taught at the Department, b) have worked, taught or carried out research at the Department, c) been recommended for membership by the Board of the Association. The membership is free of charge. Become a member by signing up through the Uppsala University Alumni Network or contact dpcr@alumni.uu.se.


Alumni Talks: Democracy from Below or Above? Prospects and Challenges for Peace

The DPCR Alumni Association held its second Alumni Talks on 28 April, this year with the theme “Democracy from Below or Above? Prospects and Challenges for Peace”. The two main speakers were Professor Kristine Höglund and Professor Isak Svensson, who both took up the positions as Professors at the Department last year. Isak Svensson's research focuses on international mediation in civil wars, religious aspects of conflict resolution processes, and dynamics of strategic nonviolent conflicts. Kristine Höglund's areas of expertise are peace processes and peacebuilding, electoral violence, and transitional justice. The talk was moderated by Professor Peter Wallensteen.

The DPCR Alumni Pub Quiz

On 1 October, the DPCR Alumni Association arranged its first Pub Quiz at Smålands Nation. Questions ranged from dinosaurs and ghost towns to war ships and the name of cocktails. A picture quiz on theme of famous bridges was also included. The race was tight, but the winners were team YESA!, consisting of Susanne Schaftenaar, Eric Skoog, Yumiko Yasuda and Annkatrin Tritschoks. The prize was the department’s brand new profile t-shirts.

The new Alumni board of 2015-2016 was elected during the annual DPCR Alumni Association General meeting on 2 June. The new board consists of Marie Allansson (Presiden, Bea Schönning (Vice-President), Henrik Persson (Secretary), Magnus Öberg (Treasurer) and Christofer Hägg (Department Liaison).

DPCR Alumni Association General Meeting  

Dear Students, Faculty and Members of the DPCR Community, 

On June 2, 2015, 18:00 at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, the DPCR Alumni Association will hold its 2015 Annual General Meeting. The purpose of this meeting is to review the Association’s past year, to take up matters on the meeting agenda and to elect the new Alumni Association’s Board for the coming year. We encourage everyone to participate in the meeting. We also encourage members to run for Board positions in order to continue the growth and development of the Association. Fika will be served.

Agenda for the General Meeting

1. Opening of the meeting.

a. Election of a meeting chairman.

b. Election of a meeting secretary.

c. Election of two testifiers.

d. Question whether the meeting has been announced in accordance with the statutes.

e. Approval of the agenda.

2. Presentation of the annual report.

3. Presentation of the financial report and the report of the Audit Committee.

4. Decision to discharge the Board.

5. Decision on whether a membership fee shall be imposed.

6. Treatment of any item presented by the Board or by a member within the guidelines set forth in the applicable statutes of the Association.

7. Election to the Board for each Board position individually, followed by the election to the Audit Committee.

8. Other matters.

9. Closure of the meeting.

The annual report will be available for download on the department’s website one week prior to the meeting.

Descriptions of the Alumni Board positions

§16 The President and Vice President

  1. The President chairs the Board and the Association and holds general responsibility for the Association.
  2. The President holds the sole signatory power of the Association, unless otherwise is provided for in these statutes.
  3. The President is elected by an absolute majority of the present and voting members of the General Meeting.
  4. The Vice President is responsible for the internal relations of the Association.
  5. The Vice President supports the President in his/her efforts.

§17 The Treasurer

  1. The Treasurer is responsible for the Association’s finances and holds, jointly with the President, signatory power in relation to financial issues.
  2. The Treasurer shall send out the financial report together with the summons to the General Meeting, and shall present the financial report in due time to the Audit Committee.

§18 The Secretary

  1. The Secretary maintains the membership register as well as the Association’s archive

§19 The Audit Committee

  1. The Audit Committee shall annually audit the accounts of the Association and submit a written report to the General Meeting.
  2. Membership in the Association is not a criterion for eligibility to the Audit Committee.
  3. Members of the Board are not eligible to the Audit Committee


New board of the DPCR Alumni Association elected

The new Alumni board of 2014-2015 was elected during the annual DPCR Alumni Association General meeting on 2 June. A presentation of the new board members follows below:

President David Ermes was a part of the initial founding group of the Alumni. He studied the last two years in the Master's Programme at the DPCR and has a background in Political Science and Law. Professionally he was working in politics and NGO work. After finishing his degree in Uppsala this summer he will be working Berlin based in policy advice. David is very much looking forward to extending the network of the DPCR and to reinforce the exceptional network this department offers to us.

Vice-President Lovisa Mickelsson was originally one of the representatives from the bachelors level when funding the alumni association. She studies Peace and Conflict at bachelors level combined with Arabic and Military history. Lovisa has previously worked as a municipality officer, also within community art projects and volunteering in Kenya. She is looking forward to the second year with the DPCR alumni and the fulfilment of visions of what the alumni could be now and in the future.

Secretary Victor Sundman has just finished his second year in the Bachelor’s Programme of Peace and Development at the DPCR. The coming year he will write his thesis in Peace and Conflict Research and Development Studies. With his base in the Bachelor’s Programme he hopes to raise awareness about the network among his fellow students, and build up interest for the network and its activities.

Department Head Magnus Öberg will serve on as treasurer and Sayra van den Berg will be the future Department Liaison.

  6. Treatment of any appeal against a Board’s decision to exclude a member according to §9 of the statutes of the Association.

Proposed Amendment to the Statutes 

§ 21 of the Statutes of the Alumni Association of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University reads:

“Amendments to the statutes,

1.Amendments to these statutes require a 2/3 majority of Members present and voting at the General Meeting.

2.Proposal for amendment may be initiated by any member of the Association, in which case the proposed amendment shall be submitted in writing to the Board at latest 21 days prior to a General Meeting. 

3.The Board must make available in writing all proposals for amendment with the agenda prior to the General Meeting”

Pursuant to the Statutes, a proposed amendment to the Statutes is attached to this announcement. 


Peace in the World: Trends in Modern History and Prospects for the Future

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the DPCR Alumni Association on 26 February brought together the most recent Dag Hammarskjöld Professors to talk about their views on the emerging trends in peace throughout the world. In the well-attended alumni event, Professor Peter Wallensteen and Professor Håvard Hegre presented historic trends and predictions on conflict and peace in the world. Departure for the discussion were two articles by the professors, recently published in the Journal of Peace Research. The event was moderated by Professor Erik Melander. After interesting presentations and discussions the speakers mingled with the alumnis at the following reception.

The DPCR Alumni Association has been launched

This afternoon, 5 June, the DPCR Alumni Association was launched at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. The meeting elected a board consisting of both BA- and MA-students. It will now start the planning for the first year of the association. After the meeting, the Department offered refreshments and snacks to celebrate the launch.

The Alumni board of 2013-2104 consists of: Christofer Hägg, Susanna Edström-Johansson, Sayra van den Berg, Nick Tobia and Magnus Öberg.

The Alumni Association aims to strengthen the link between former and current students and with the Department as such. Members will have access to a valuable network of former students. Membership application is open to all current and former students and employees of the Department.
