How can we prevent sexual violence in the context of conflict? Uppsala University’s Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice warmly welcome you to this Public Symposium. Sexual violence has been recognized as a weapon, a strategy and a practice of war. Its commission constitutes a serious international crime. A diversity of actors and approaches are needed to stop it from happening and to change the conditions that drive it. The Nobel Peace Prize 2018, awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, shines a light on the problem, underscoring that the time has arrived to work towards its prevention.
It is our honour to announce that Ms. Pramila Patten, United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, will deliver a keynote address. A panel discussion will introduce research and practice at the frontlines of the issue and feature Professor Elisabeth Wood (Yale University, USA), Dr. Ann-Kristin Sjöberg (Geneva Call, Switzerland) and Ms. Tina Musuya (Centre for Domestic Violence Prevention, Uganda).
All are welcome to this free and public event. In order to attend, we kindly ask you to register by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, stating your full name, institutional affiliation, and confirming your attendance at the symposium. Please send in your registration/confirmation no later than Thursday, 13 December 2018, at noon.
