Recent Sanctions-related UN Resolutions

13 July 2018 – With Resolution 2428 the Security Council decides to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan until 31 May 2019. There are a few exemptions from the sanctions; for instance, the measures do not apply to arms and related material solely intended for support of or use by UN personnel, including the UN Mission in the Republic in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Travel and financial sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206 are renewed until 31 May 2019.

The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 1 July 2019.

31 May 2018 – With Resolution 2418 the Security Council decides to renew until 15 July 2018 the sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206. The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 14 August 2018.

24 May 2017 – With Resolution 2353 the Security Council decides to renew until 31 May 2018 the sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206. The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 30 June 2018. 

31 May 2016 – With Resolution 2290 the Security Council decides to renew until 31 May 2017 the travel and financial sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206. The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 1 July 2017.

7 April 2016 – With Resolution 2280 the Security Council decides to renew until 1 June 2016 the sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206. The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 1 July 2016.

2 March 2016 – With Resolution 2271 the Security Council decides to renew until 15 April 2016 the sanctions imposed in 2015 with resolution 2206. The mandate of the Panel of Experts is extended until 15 May 2016. 

3 March 2015 – With Resolution 2206 the Security Council decides to impose targeted sanctions, travel ban and freezing of assets, on individuals and entities obstructing reconciliation or peace processes, undermining the political process or abusing human rights in South Sudan. A Sanctions Committee is established to monitor the implementation of the measures and a Panel of Experts, with a mandate until 2 March 2016, is created.
