The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.
Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at Uppsala University is the world's leading provider of data on organized violence, and the program is a unique source of information about conflicts worldwide and has been at the Department since the 1980s.
The department and UCDP is now seeking a research assistant for the period 1 February 2021 – 31 January 2022, or by agreement.
Duties: The tasks consists of assisting the project management mainly by encoding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP's database with a special focus on Syria and the rest of the Middle East. Text writing to varying degrees will also be included in the tasks.
Requirements: The applicant must have the following:
• Bachelor's degree in Peace and Conflict studies or Political Science studies
• Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
• Independent analytical ability
• Very good English in speech and writing
• Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
• Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict.
Additional qualifications: Master's degree in peace and conflict studies or in political science. Experience of data collection, with a focus on Syria and the rest of the Middle East.
Individual suitability will be strongly considered.
